Setting Up a Printer See the documentation that came with the printer for setup information, including how to: • • • • Printer Cable Your printer connects to your computer with either a USB cable or a parallel cable. Your printer may not come with a printer cable, so if you purchase a cable separately, ensure that it is compatible with your printer.

Transferring Information to a New Computer Windows XP provides a Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to move data, such as e-mails, window sizes, toolbar settings, and Internet bookmarks from one computer to another. First you collect the data from the source computer, and then you import the data to the new computer.
To transfer information to a new computer: Click the Start button, point to All Programs→ Accessories→ System Tools, and then click Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. On the welcome screen, click Next. On the Which computer is this? screen, select New Computer, and then click Next.
HINT: Selecting the connection method This computer connects directly to the Internet enables the integrated firewall provided with Windows XP . Setting Up and Using Yo ur Computer Network Setup Wizard Windows XP provides a Network Setup Wizard to guide you through the process of sharing files, printers, or an Internet connection between computers in a home or small office.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup. If you do not have an MSN Explorer or AOL icon on your desktop or if you want to set up an Internet connection with a different ISP: Save any work in progress and close all open programs.
If you are having problems connecting to the Internet, see "Internet, Modem, and E-Mail Problems" on page 35. If you cannot connect to the Internet but have successfully connected in the past, the ISP might have a service outage. Contact your ISP to check the service status, or try connecting again later.

Using System Restore The Microsoft to allow you to return your computer to an earlier operating state (without affecting data files) if changes to the hardware, software, or other system settings have left the computer in an undesirable operating state. See Windows Help for information on using System Restore.
Select a restore point, and then click Next. If a calendar date has only one restore point, then that restore point is automatically selected. If two or more restore points are available, click the restore point that you prefer. Click Next. The Restoration Complete screen appears after System Restore finishes collecting data, and then the computer automatically restarts.
Drivers What Is a Driver? A driver is a program that controls a device such as a printer, mouse, or keyboard. All devices require a driver program. A driver acts like a translator between the device and the programs that use the device.
Reinstalling drivers NOTICE: The Dell Support website and your provide approved drivers for Dell™ computers. If you install drivers obtained from other sources, your computer might not work correctly. Using Windows XP Device Driver Rollback If a problem occurs on your computer after you install or update a driver, use Windows XP Device Driver Rollback to replace the driver with the previously installed version.
