  • Page 6: Turning Off Your Computer

    Press and hold the power button while the computer is unplugged to ground the system board. Remove the cover. CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components.
  • Page 7 CAUTION: To connect a network cable, first plug the cable into the network device and then plug it into the computer. Connect any telephone or network cables to your computer. Connect your computer and all attached devices to their electrical outlets. Turn on your computer. If required, verify that the computer works correctly by running the Dell Diagnostics.

    Removing and Installing Components This section provides detailed information on how to remove or install the components from your computer. Recommended Tools The procedures in this document may require the following tools: • Small flat-blade screwdriver • Phillips screwdriver • Small plastic scribe Removing the Cover Before Working Inside Your Computer .
  • Page 9: Removing The Front Bezel

    After Working Inside Your Computer . Follow the procedures in Removing the Front Bezel Before Working Inside Your Computer . Follow the procedures in Remove the cover. Pry the front bezel retention clips away from the chassis. Rotate the bezel away from the computer to release the hooks on the opposite edge of the bezel from the chassis. Then, lift the chassis and remove the front bezel from the computer.

    Installing the Front Bezel Insert the hooks along the bottom edge of the front bezel into the slots on the chassis front. Push the bezel toward the computer to engage the front bezel retention clips until they click into place. Install the cover.

    Installing The WLAN Card Insert the WLAN card into the connector on the system board and press down until it is securely in place. Fix the latch. Place the antenna puck on the connector and tighten the screws that secure it to the computer. Install the cover.
  • Page 12 Remove the data cable and power cable from the back of the drive. Slide the drive-cage handle toward the back of the computer into the unlocked position.

    Rotate the drive cage upward using the handle and lift the drive cage free off the chassis. Installing the Drive Cage Place the drive cage on the edge of the computer to allow access to the cable connectors on the hard drive. Connect the data cable and power cable to the back of the hard drive.
  • Page 14 Remove the data cable and power cable from the back of the optical drive. Lift the blue tab and slide the optical drive inwards to remove it from the computer.

    Pry the sides of the bracket to remove the optical drive. Installing the Optical Drive Insert the optical drive into the bracket. Lift the blue tab and slide the optical drive outwards to insert it into the computer. Connect the data cable and power cable to the optical drive. Install the cover.

    Flex the hard-drive bracket and then remove the hard drive from the bracket. Release the screws that secure the hard drive to the top of the hard-drive bracket. Release the screws that secure the hard drive to the underside of the hard-drive bracket. Installing the Hard Drive Tighten the screws to secure the hard drive to the hard-drive bracket.

    Pull the release lever away from the expansion card until you release the securing tab from the dent in the card. Then, ease the card up and out of its connector and remove it from the computer. Installing The Expansion Card Insert the expansion card into the connector on the system board and press down to secure it in place.

    Memory Module Guidelines To ensure optimal performance of your computer, observe the following general guidelines when configuring your system memory: • Memory modules of different sizes can be mixed (for example, 2 GB and 4 GB). But, all populated channels must have identical configurations.

    Installing the Power Supply Place the power supply in the chassis and slide outward to secure it. Tighten the screws securing the power supply to the back of the computer. Insert the spacer. Connect the 24–pin power cable to the system board. Thread the 4–pin power cable into the restraint and chassis clips.
  • Page 32 Press the clip to release and disconnect the heat-sink assembly cable from the system board. Release the I/O Board/FlyWire cable from the routing channel on the heat sink.
  • Page 33 Press the clip to release and disconnect the fan cable from the system board. Loosen the captive screws, lift the heat sink assembly upwards, and then remove it from the computer. Lay the assembly with the fan facing downwards, and with the thermal grease facing upwards.
