Antenna and feedline installation

DGT DISTRIBUTED GENERATION TRIP CONTROL SYSTEM – INSTRUCTION MANUAL
DGT units are ordered with an antenna and feedline package, ready for installation at the
station site. A number of standard feedline lengths are available. The length necessary to
connect the station antenna to the DGT is determined during the site survey.
Antennas must be mounted in a location providing an unobstructed radio signal path to
associated stations. Radio signals at UHF travel primarily by line-of-sight, and obstructions
between the transmitting and receiving devices will affect system performance. A line-of-
sight path is achieved by mounting the DGT antenna on a pole, tower, or other elevated
structure that raises it to a height sufficient to clear surrounding terrain and other
obstructions.
The importance of a clear transmission path relates closely to the distance between DGT
units. If that distance is limited, for example up to 4.8 km (3 miles), then some obstructions
in the communications path can usually be tolerated with minimal impact. For longer
distances, any substantial obstruction in the communications path could compromise
performance or block communications entirely. If you are not familiar with the effects of

ANTENNA INSTALLATION - DGT-U and DGT-D
The antenna supplied with DGT-D and DGT-U units is a directional Yagi type that must be
properly aimed at the DGT-R site with which it will communicate.
Follow these steps to install the antenna at DGT-D and DGT-U sites:
1.
Mount the antenna securely to a pole or other support structure with the hardware
provided.
2.
Aim the antenna directly at the DGT-R site with which the unit will communicate. (The
direction of maximum transmission/reception is opposite the antenna mounting
bracket).
3.
Secure the coaxial cable to the mounting pole and route it to the DGT enclosure.
4.
Connect the antenna cable to the Type-N connector at the bottom of the DGT
enclosure. Tighten the connector securely.
ANTENNA INSTALLATION - DGT-R
DGT-R (Repeater) units are furnished with an omni-directional antenna that does not
require aiming. However, it is still important to mount the antenna at a height that allows
an unobstructed path to the stations it will serve. Omni-directional antennas are typically
mounted to a pole.
Follow these steps to install the antenna at DGT-R sites:
1.
Secure the antenna to the mounting pole or other support structure with the
hardware provided.
2.
Connect a low-loss coaxial cable to the antenna and tighten the connector securely.
3.
Secure the coaxial cable to the mounting pole and route it to the DGT enclosure.
4.
Connect the antenna cable to the Type-N connector at the bottom of the DGT
enclosure. Tighten the connector securely.
