    Preparations Preparing the Power Supply You can power the camcorder using a battery pack or directly using the PD-E1 USB Power Adapter. If you connect the USB power adapter to the camcorder while a battery pack is attached, the camcorder will draw power from the power outlet.

    Preparing the Power Supply To remove the battery pack 1 Slide the BATTERY RELEASE switch in the direction of the arrow and hold it pressed down. 2 Slide the battery pack down and then pull it out. Checking the Remaining Battery Charge With the camcorder turned off, press the BATT.

IMPORTANT • Be careful not to drop the camcorder when attaching, removing or adjusting the various accessories. Using a table or other stable surface is recommended.

    Preparing the Camcorder Attaching the Lens Hood While recording, the supplied lens hood with lens barrier is effective for reducing stray light that can be the cause of lens flare and ghost images. Additionally, closing the lens barrier can help prevent fingerprints and dirt accumulation on the lens.

When the camcorder is on, you can also press and hold the DISP button for more than 2 seconds to open the [LCD Backlight] setup menu.

    Adjusting the Focus AF-Boosted MF With this focus mode, you can focus manually most of the way and let the camcorder finish focusing automatically. This is very convenient when you want to make certain that your 4K recordings are in sharp focus. Additionally, with this mode, if the camcorder cannot evaluate how to adjust the focus, it will not perform unreliable focus adjustments.

    Using Looks Using Looks The camcorder can shoot using looks — combinations of settings that affect the characteristics of the image produced. The camcorder offers a number of preset looks, some of whose settings you can adjust to your preference. This function can only be used when the shooting mode is set to ’, ‚, “ or n. You can fully adjust the image characteristics using a custom picture file (A 94).

    Setting the Time Code Setting the Time Code The camcorder generates a time code signal and records it with the recorded clips. The time code signal is output from the SDI OUT terminal (z only) and can be output also from the HDMI OUT terminal (A 114). Depending on the frame rate used, you may be able to select between a drop frame an non-drop frame time code signal (A 72).

    Setting the Time Code 3 After completing all the fields of the time code, select [OK]. • Select [Cancel] to close the screen without changing the time code. • If the running mode is set to [ Free Run], the time code will start running from the time code entered the moment you select [OK].

    Setting the User Bit Setting the User Bit The user bit can be selected from the date or the time of recording, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system. There are sixteen possible characters: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F.
  • Page 74 Recording Audio Recording Audio The camcorder features 4-channel linear PCM (LPCM) or 2-channel AAC audio recording and playback for MP4 clips, and 4-channel LPCM audio recording and playback for XF-AVC clips. The sampling frequency is 48 kHz. You can record audio using the INPUT terminals* (commercially available microphones or analog line-in audio sources), the MIC terminal (commercially available microphones) or the built-in microphone.
  • Page 75 Recording Audio Audio Settings and Recorded Audio Channels Which audio inputs are recorded to which audio channels is determined by a combination of menu settings, whether the handle unit is attached, and other audio-related controls on the camcorder. The following table gives an overview of the possible combinations.
  • Page 76 Recording Audio Connecting an External Microphone or External Audio Input Source to the Camcorder To each of the INPUT terminals you can attach commercially available microphones or analog line-in sources with an XLR connector. To use the INPUT terminals and microphone holder, the handle unit must be correctly attached to the camcorder.

Recording the Same Audio Input to Two Channels By default, when using the INPUT terminals, each audio input is recorded to a separate audio channel (INPUT 1 to CH1 and INPUT 2 to CH2).

The audio screen shows an overview of the audio channels used and, for each audio channel: the audio input currently selected, whether the audio recording level is adjusted automatically or manually and the audio level indicator.

If the handle unit is not attached, adjust the audio levels using the FUNC menu (A 79).   • Page 81 Recording Audio Low-Cut Filter (Built-in Microphone) When using the built-in microphone, you can activate the low cut filter to reduce the sound of blowing wind and other ambient sounds when recording outdoors. When recording in surroundings unaffected by wind or if you want to record low-frequency sounds, we recommend turning off the low-cut filter.
