    Linksys wireless adapters also provide users access to a wired network when using an access point, such as the Dual-Band Wireless A + G Access Point, or wireless router. An integrated wireless and wired network is called an infrastructure: a wireless network infrastructure network.

    When you wish to connect your wired network with your wireless network, the Access Point’s network port can be used to connect to any of Linksys's switches or routers. The Setup Wizard will run a search for the Access Point within your network and then display a list along with the status information for each access point. If there are more than one displayed, select the Access Point by clicking on it and click the Next button to continue, the Back button to return to a previous screen, or Exit to exit the Setup Wizard.

The Device Name is a unique name given to the Access Point to prevent confusion when using multiple Access Points.

Make sure that the security mode is the same for all the devices on your network. • WEP. From this screen, select the level of encryption, and enter a passphrase, which will generate the WEP key for you automatically, or you can enter the key manually.

Wireless-A Settings Authentication Type. The default is set to Open System (Default) authentication, when the sender and the recipient do NOT use a WEP key for authentication.

Roaming is the ability of a portable computer user to communicate continuously while moving freely throughout an area greater than that covered by a single Access Point. Before using the roaming function, the workstation must make sure that it is the same channel number as the Access Point of the dedicated coverage area.
  • Page 40 Can Linksys Wireless products support file and printer sharing? Linksys Wireless products perform the same function as LAN products. Therefore, Linksys Wireless products can work with Netware, Windows NT/2000, or other LAN operating systems to support printer or file sharing.

Every obstacle placed between an Access Point and wireless PC will create signal loss. Leaded glass, metal, concrete floors, water and walls will inhibit the signal and reduce range.

The current generation of Linksys products provide several network security features, but they require specific action on your part for implementation.
