SIP Summary
SIP Summary
A SIP is a type of PLIM that provides data interfaces for the routing system through the installed shared
port adapters (SPAs). The SIP mates with its associated Forwarding Processor 40G (FP40) through the
chassis midplane. Each available SPA provides different interface types and port densities, as described
in
Chapter 3, "Overview: Cisco ASR 14000 Series Router Shared Port Adapters."

Cisco ASR 14000 PLIM Overview
The Cisco ASR 14000 Series Router has two PLIMs:

The Cisco ASR 14000 Series 4-Port 10-Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module
line-rate, IEEE 802.3-compliant 10-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Physical connections can be made using
modular XENPAK pluggable optics. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is supported
with the proper XENPAK, enabling the Cisco ASR 14000 Series Router to be directly connected into an
optical filter module, such as the Cisco ONS 15454 Reconfigurable Optical Add-drop Multiplexer
(ROADM). This allows service providers to increase efficiencies, improve reliability, and reduce
operational and capital costs through elimination of expensive and bulky optical transponder equipment,
even as video-based applications rapidly increase traffic in their DWDM networks.
