Checking the "Analysis" function In analysis mode, the device automatically performs a system adjustment every 15 minutes. However, if analysis is taking place at that moment, the next system adjustment is only initiated once analysis has ended, i.e. as soon as the probe is withdrawn from the exhaust pipe and the measured values have dropped to zero.
- Fluctuations (noise) may be caused by dirt in the analyzer part, a defective receiving chamber, a faulty (noisy) channel amplifier or an unstable reference voltage 5 V Dirt in the gas-conveyance system primarily affects the HC measuring channel. Whenever errors caused by dirt arise, cross sensitivity to condensation also increases.
Checking and fine-tuning measuring accuracy ! Before commencing testing or fine-tuning work as described in Sections 6.2 or 6.3, the analyzer must be warmed up for a period of 10 minutes. The cover of the device must be closed during this time. It is essential to note the instructions in Section 6.1 before checking and fine-tuning measuring accuracy.
Fine-tuning the indicating accuracy In devices for which calibration is compulsory by law, the calibration seal on the rear wall of the device must be removed for fine-tuning. To do so, loosen the screw beneath the seal and swivel the safety panel to the side (function switch S 60 is now accessible). The gas outlet must lead to the open air and have a sufficiently wide cross section.

Fine-tuning the air-pressure gauge The analyzer requires two reference points in the range of 700 to 1100 mbar. These points should be spaced by approx. 100 mbar. In both cases, a reference pressure is set in the device as default, and the device ascertains the exact value of this reference pressure as part of the fine-tuning function.

Error messages / malfunctions The exhaust-gas analyzer is equipped with extensive self-test functions. Malfunctions which can be detected automatically are indicated by means of the error messages described below (Sections 7.1 to 7.3). Error messages are displayed in two forms: a) One group (Sections 7.1 and 7.2) takes the form of binary numbers (1, 2, 4, 8, etc.).

8.2.1 Checking for an obstruction In the zero-gas system: - Open the device. - Remove coarse filter GF 4 from hose 8. - Press the "Pump" button. 8.2.2 Checking the pressure switches - Switch off the device. - Connect the calibration-gas inlet and the outlet for gas and condensation and connect to a siphon as illustrated. Keep hoses short. - Connect a multimeter (continuity test) to pressure switch pins 3 and 1 (pin 2 is not internally connected!) - Carefully introduce pressure P (blow into the hose).
8.2.4 Checking the pump delivery rate - Connect the flow meter to the test-gas inlet. - Press the "Pump" button. Check: That a delivery rate of > 4 l/min is achieved during zero adjustment. That an overall delivery rate of > 8 l/min is achieved after zero adjustment.
Indicating faults In the case of a fault on the display, we must distinguish between the following: - If the error message Err 32 Err 32 Err 32 Err 32 Err 32 appears (fault in the display control), simply replace the display module without performing further tests. - Likewise, if a single segment or an LED has failed, replace the display module.
RAM check error System parameters are stored in the RAM module. During the RAM check, these system parameters are monitored to ensure that they remain within sensible limits pre-defined by the manufacturer. If the RAM contents are outside these limits, an error message results. A faulty RAM content may have various causes: - A faulty powwer supply (battery) - Replaced motherboard...
Faulty channel identification The "channel amplifier" modules feature a coding plug S 1. The connection assigned here enables the microprocessor unit (MPU) to identify the measuring channel in question. Take care to ensure the correct coding when replacing a receiving chamber! Check that the jumper plug is correctly situated.
Faulty channel amplifier Amplifier output signal outside permitted range during zero adjustment. The MPU detects a voltage < 1.0V (lower limit) or > 3.5V (upper limit) in the measuring channel on the motherboard (X 107, X 207 or X 307) designated by the fault number. Amplifier signal lies outside one of the limit values: - With the digital multimeter (DMM), check the signal of the channel amplifier concerned at X 7 (reference point X 9) to see whether it matches the measured value on the motherboard (at X 107, X 207 and X 307). For performing measurements on the channel amplifiers, unscrew the analyzer part (3 screws on the back of the chopper) and temporarily fasten it with a screw in a bore-hole in the upper edge of the device's rear wall.
Faulty sensor-board identification The self-test routine detects faulty equipment on the sensor board. For "Sensor board" location diagram of components, see section 8.15, "Checking the sensor board". Check: - Has the wrong sensor board been installed (check ordering data!)? - Is there a fault in the hardware? Using the DMM, measure on the sensor board: X 83 MA = reference point...
8.10 Faulty engine-speed measuring channel In the case of an error message concerning engine-speed measurement: - Check that the selector button for 2-stroke / 4-stroke is correctly set. - Check whether the fault can be remedied by installing a new clamp-on speed sensor. - Check the pulse input.
8.11 Faulty oil-temperature measuring channel - Check the sensor resistance: Pin1 to pin 2 = 1005 + 5 Ω @ 25 °C 1530 +12 Ω @ 90 °C or check whether the fault can be remedied with a new sensor. - Sensor OK: switch off and open the exhaust-gas analyzer.
8.13 Supply-voltage alarm The exhaust-gas analyzer internally monitors the voltage at the filter capacitor C1 (nominal value 10V, see circuit diagram, Sections 12.1 and 12.2). An error message is displayed when the voltage drops below a lower limit of approx. 7.6V or exceeds an upper limit of approx. 12.5 V. This ensures that the exhaust-gas analyzer is unable to perform incorrect analysis when subject to under-voltage or overvoltage.
8.15.3 Checking function of switch S 60 - Connect the DMM to X81 (reference point, MD). - Measure at X60 and X61 V + 5.2V. - Press switch S60, check: At setting 1, LED H61 lights up, X61 = 0V At setting 2, LED H60 lights up, X60 = 0V.
8.16 Power supply to power electronics The covered parts of the printed circuit board carry live voltage. Do not remove the cover! An auxiliary supply of AC 110 V is supplied by the transformer via connector X 1. This voltage is switched through electronically to the pump via connector X 2.
8.17 Power supply to motherboard Also refer to circuit diagram in Sections 12.1 and 12.2. This diagram illustrates the voltages at the transformer and filter capacitor C 1 and their distribution in the exhaust-gas analyzer. 10. Repair work 10.1 Replacing the lamp - Remove the 3 fastening screws (1) of the complete unit on the rear wall of the device. - Lift up and remove the analyzer part. - Remove the screw (2) and the retaining bracket (3).

10.8 Replacing the motherboard The motherboard contains a battery-backed RAM module. The system settings are stored in this module. These settings must be re- entered when the motherboard has been replaced. - Replace the motherboard. - Insert a battery (Section 10.7). - Switch on the exhaust-gas analyzer and wait until system adjustment is complete.
Safety test The mains plug is removed, the mains switch of the specimen device is switched on. (to DIN 57411 / VDE 411) Following assembly work on the exhaust-gas analyzer, check that all protective conduc- tors are correctly connected and mechanically secure. For protective-conductor con- nections, refer to the circuit diagram in Sections 12.1 and 12.2.
