Caring for your ThinkPad computer 9. Wait for the surface to dry completely and remove any cloth fibers from the computer surface. Cleaning your computer keyboard 1. Absorb some isopropyl rubbing alcohol on a soft, dust-free cloth. 2. Wipe each keytop surface with the cloth. Wipe the keys one by one; if you wipe several keys at a time, the cloth may hook onto an adjacent key and possibly damage it.

If you cannot reset your hard disk password, Lenovo authorized servicer cannot reset your password or recover data from the hard disk. You must take your computer to a Lenovo authorized servicer or a marketing representative to have the hard disk drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a fee will be charged for parts and service.
If an external PS/2 computer does not work. Use the numeric keypad on the external keyboard. Problem: A number appears when you type a letter. Solution The numeric lock function is on. To disable it, press and hold Shift or Fn and then press NmLk (ScrLk).
Solving computer problems Make sure that the mouse or pointing-device cable is securely connected to the ThinkPad Advanced Dock, the ThinkPad Advanced Mini Dock, or the ThinkPad Essential Port Replicator. If your mouse is incompatible with the PS/2 mouse, disable the TrackPoint, using the ThinkPad Configuration Program.

Note: If you use the Fn+F7 key combination to apply a presentation scheme, press Fn+F7 at least three times in three seconds, and the image is displayed on the computer screen. Problem: The computer does not return from standby mode, or the standby indicator stays on and the computer does not work.

Solving computer problems Battery problems Problem: The battery cannot be fully charged by the power-off method in the standard charge time for your computer. Solution: The battery might be over-discharged. Do the following: 1. Turn off the computer. 2. Make sure that the over-discharged battery is in the computer. 3.
Solution: The rattling noise might be heard when: v The hard disk drive starts accessing the data or when it stops. v You are carrying the hard disk drive. v You are carrying your computer. This is a normal characteristic of a hard disk drive and is not a defect. Problem: The hard disk drive does not work.
Solving computer problems Help provides information about the various pages in the Rescue and Recovery workspace. Restart closes the Rescue and Recovery workspace, and resumes the startup sequence that was interrupted. Fingerprint authentication problems If your finger(s) have any of the following conditions, you may not be able to register or authenticate it: v Your finger is wrinkled.

CDs and problems associated with using an incorrect CD version. The complete backup of all the files and programs that Lenovo preinstalled on your computer resides in a hidden protected area, or partition, of the hard disk.
Recovery options Notes: 1. If the optical drive is not attached to your ThinkPad computer during recovery, DVD software and CD-recording software will not be installed. To ensure that they will be installed correctly, install the optical drive in the Ultrabay Enhanced before performing a recovery operation. 2.
You can increase the storage capacity of your computer by replacing the hard disk drive with one of greater capacity. You can purchase a new hard disk drive from your reseller or Lenovo marketing representative. Notes: 1. Replace the hard disk drive only if you upgrade it or have it repaired. The connectors and bay of the hard disk drive were not designed for frequent changes, or drive swapping.

For models with 15.0-inch LCD: 6. Detach the side rubber rails from the hard disk drive. 7. Attach the side rubber rails to a new hard disk drive. 8. Insert the hard disk drive into the hard disk drive bay; then firmly slide it into place.
Replacing memory Replacing memory Increasing memory capacity is an effective way to make programs run faster. You can increase the amount of memory in your computer by installing a double data rate 2 (DDR2) synchronous dynamic random access memory (DRAM) unbuffered small outline dual inline memory module (SO-DIMM), available as an option, in the memory slot of your computer.

6. Turn the computer over. Lift the left edge of the palm rest a little in the direction shown by arrow 1 , and then lift the palm rest from the computer in the direction shown by arrow 2 . Note: When you lift the left and front edges of the palm rest, it is normal to hear a click.

Replacing memory 8. Remove the memory cover. 9. If two SO-DIMMs are already installed in the memory slot, remove one of them to make room for the new one by pressing out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time 1 . Be sure to save it for future use 2 .

Align the right and left top edges of the palm rest. 14. Push gently on the area marked in this figure, in the direction shown by the arrow, until you hear a click.

Close the computer display, and turn the computer over; then replace the screws that secure the palm rest. 17. Reinstall the battery. 18.
